Free Man of Colour
by Charles Smith |
| |
|
|
 |
|
|
In 1824, Reverend Robert Wilson, president of Ohio University,
enrols John Newton Templeton, a young ex-slave, as the first
black man to attend the University.
Wilson's wife, Jane, is jealous of the opportunity for education
afforded Templeton, especially since she, as a woman, cannot
study at the University.
Wilson believes that Templeton has a divine calling to lead
free slaves to found a new African colony - Liberia.
Caught between the expectations of Wilson, and the realisation
of what founding a colony of free blacks in Africa would mean
to blacks in America, Templeton finally learns what it really
means to be a free man of colour.
Chalres Smith is head of the Playwriting Program at Ohio
University. Independent Theatre's cast of three comprises
Shedrick Yarkpai (himself from Liberia) as Templeton, David
Roach as Wilson, and Lyn Wilson as Jane.

My Boy Jack
by David Haig |
| |
|
|
 |
|
|
In 1913, Rudyard Kipling was England's most famous living
author - creator of The Jungle Books, The Man Who Would
Be King, Kim, Gunga Din. He was also a fervent patriot,
and proponent of England's opposition to Germany.
He felt duty-bound to send his son, Jack, to war, despite
the boy being legally blind.
This triggered a bitter family conflict, which left Britain's
most renowned patriot devastated by the warring of his own
greatest passions - his love for his children, and his devotion
to King and Country.
Written as a play by actor, David Haig, the recent film
starred Haig, with Daniel Radcliffe as Jack.
David Roach and Kathryn Fisher will play Rudyard and Carrie
Kipling.

Vanity Fair
a new play by Rob Croser
adapted from W. M. Thackeray's novel |
| |
|
|
 |
|
|
A brand new stage adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's
outrageously funny social satire on society, snobbery and
greed.
Alluringly resourceful, Becky Sharp defies her poverty-stricken
background, and claws her way up the social ladder. Meanwhile,
her sentimental friend, Amelia, pines for a two-timing soldier.
As the two heroines weave their way through the bawdy, tawdry
glamour of Regency society -- even paying a visit to the Battle
of Waterloo! -- they encounter a delicious assortment of rogues,
rakes, dandies and lecherous lords.
Becky Sharp is one of literature's most fascinatingly ruthless
heroines, and a clear model for Scarlett O'Hara in Gone
with the Wind. Recent film and television adaptations
have tended to be rather serious, because they omit Thackeray's
scintillating narrations -- where all the novel's humour lies.
Rob Croser's new adaptation retains the narrative voice
-- thus restoring the novel's wickedly funny satire, as it
explodes onto the stage in a riot of circus colour and outrageous
comedy.
