Season 2008

Play 1:   Cry, the Beloved Country

Adapted from Alan Paton’s novel by Roy Sargeant.

Two fathers – one a Zulu pastor, one a wealthy white landowner – are brought together by a tragedy involving both their sons. They strive to find a way forward in a South Africa divided by fear and racial divisions.

Alan Paton’s landmark 1948 novel awoke the world to the plight of non-whites in pre-Apartheid South Africa.

Independent Theatre staged this powerful adaptation at the Odeon Theatre in 2006. The play’s cast of 20 included 13 actors drawn from Adelaide’s African communities. It was an enormously popular and critical success, and many people missed out.

The production is being re-mounted at The Space, in association with Adelaide Festival Centre Presents.

Play 2:   The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Adapted from Mark Twain’s novel by Rob Croser.

Abused, unwashed and unwanted, Huck Finn decides to escape “sivilisation” and his violent, drunken father. He teams up with Jim, an escaping slave. In their epic raft voyage down the mighty Mississippi River, they encounter all sorts of rogues and scoundrels in a South committed to slavery. For Huck, it becomes a journey of self-discovery, as he finds his own humanity through friendship.

Ernest Hemingway called Huckleberry Finn “the best book we’ve ever had. There was nothing before. There’s been nothing as good since.”

Independent Theatre’s new theatrical version stars Will Cox and Shedrick Yarkpai (Jem Finch and Tom Robinson in Independent Theatre’s 2007 smash hit To Kill a Mockingbird).

Play 3:   Major Barbara

Bernard Shaw’s famous 1905 comedy portrays the conflict between spiritual and worldly power.

Barbara Undershaft is a dedicated young major in the Salvation Army, working among the poor of London’s East End. Andrew Undershaft, the father she has never known, is a millionaire manufacturer of armaments.

Barbara and her Machiavellian father meet and challenge each other to visit their respective places of employment.

Following its 2005 success with Pygmalion, Independent Theatre is delighted to present this most brilliant of social comedies, which will star Anna Steen (Anna Karenina) as Barbara and David Roach (Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird) as Undershaft.
